PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: General and Particular

Our Parish General Mission Statement is an articulation and expression of our goal as Catholics and members of the Parish. It defines what we are (our being) what we want to be (our hopes) our desires (aspirations) and our plans. It is called General Mission Statement because it links directly with the Universal Mission of the Church; hence making us part of the One Body of Christ.

mission statement

“To Be A United Catholic Community Formed By The Word Of God; Nourished By The Eucharist And Other Sacraments; Witnessing To Our Faith, Hope And Charity In Christ, By Serving One Another And Effecting Positive Change In The Society”.

Because, it is General and derived from the Universal, it never changes. It remains the reason for our constitution and being as a Parish. For as long as we are here, we will keep exploring its meaning and challenges until Christ comes again. Thus, the pursuance of the fulfillment of our General Mission Statement is a journey which leads us to union with Christ.

To enable us remain focused and determined in that General Mission, we identify an aspect of the General Mission Statement and express it as our Annual Particular Mission Statement. This is the basis of the Parish tradition of Annual Mission Statement. It is instructional, motivational or inspirational.

2011 MISSION STATEMENT

Our Mission Statement for the 2011 pastoral year is, St. Dominic’s is our TREASURE and our PRIDE. What is your SPIRITUAL and MATERIAL contribution? St. Dominic’s Church was dedicated on the 21st of January 1996 that makes our church fifteen years old this very month in 2011. The axiom, St. Dominic’s is our treasure and our pride, is well known to many St. Dominic’s Parishioner. However, the second aspect of the axiom brings us to personally reflect and make a commitment to St. Dominic’s. The commitment that is being advocated is that which is both spiritual and material as well. In other words, if St. Dominic’s is really a treasure and a pride place of worship that the individual relates as being valuable then the individual should contribute towards its growth. Now the two most essential aspects of our life that is brought into the Mission Statement help to fulfil the need of every parishioner.

Considering the spiritual aspect of the church, we see the Church as the family of God that has come together. And St. Paul in his letter to the Colossians say, “He is the head of his body the Church; he is the source of the body’s life.” This introduces the spiritual life of the Church. Coming together to worship in St. Dominic’s started long ago when the Church was founded in 1954 to be served by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). It is obvious that we need to make a retreat in order to evaluate our common journey as a family, in St. Dominic’s where we practise, live and express our faith. During this year we shall be pondering on questions concerning our experiences in the parish: Is the family of God (St. Dominic’s) really and truly experiencing the qualities of a true family? Are we experiencing true love, care, joy amongst ourselves? Asked by members of other Catholic Churches, is ours a true VIBRANT CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY?

The material aspect of St. Dominic’s point to the fact that, after fifteenth years its dedication some areas are beginning to require our attention and some other needs are beginning to present themselves before us. We shall be embarking on physical projects in the parish renovating very important areas, constructing the interlocking blocks at the school premises, erecting Blessed Sacrament Chapel etc. As the church celebrates its fifteenth year anniversary of its dedication it behoves on every parishioner to make a rededication, revitalization, a recommitment to this precious house of prayer. May the Lord strengthen our faith in him and may all who worship here find peace. Amen. God bless St. Dominic’s for ever more. Amen.

What is the concept or notion of ‘mission’?
