MISSION STATEMENTWhat is the concept or notion of ‘mission’? Dreams, as the activity of the mind lack logic or reason and justification because the mind functions like an “aimless wanderer”. Hence, dreams are usually assigned to the ‘Sub-Conscious’ or sleeping and dull (inactive) corner of the mind. No wonder most dreams occur during sleep. But some dreams can be so strong and re-occurring making deep impressions beyond mere imagination that the human mind begins to ‘see’ something far, yet real. Thus, the mind does not only dreams, it also has VISION. This means that it has the capacity to see what lies beyond the surface, beyond the now and beyond immediate boundaries. By the power of vision, the mind soars high and far in the domain of infinite possibilities having glimpse of something great, good and beautiful. What the mind sees as great, good and beautiful attracts it. The attraction provides the impetus or drive for the mind to go all out and all the way to pursue the ‘great, good and beautiful’ and possess it. This pursuit becomes the goal or MISSION of the individual or corporate body which the mind represents or works for. The goal or mission is articulated in words and expressed as the individual’s or corporate body’s MISSION STATEMENT. A mission statement states a goal, focus and direction for the person or institution that owns it. Without it, the person or institution has no focus or direction, no programme of action and ultimately lives or exists for nothing. THE DIVINE MISSION STATEMENT Jesus, Our Lord and Saviour, knew and understood the importance of mission statement in human life. Hence, at the beginning of His ministry, He announced His Mission Statement adapted from Isaiah 61:1-2. THE UNIVERSAL MISSION STATEMENT OF THE CHURCH Because Jesus established the Church to continue His ministry (work) (Lk. 4:18-19) on earth, the mission of Jesus is the mission of the Church. Thus the mission statement of Jesus is also that of the Church. It expresses the Universal Mission Of The Church, which is not subject to the limitations of space and time.
