                   HOW TO GO TO CONFESSION

  1. Kneel down and say: “forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. My last confession was…” (Tell him how many weeks or months ago).
  2. “These are my sins.” Tell the priest your sins and how many times. Do not say “several” or “many”. When finished, say “These are all my sins, I am sincerely sorry for them and ask for God’s mercy and pardon.
  3. Then listen to what the priest says and to the penance he gives you.
  4. Then say the Act of Contrition (or Sorrow): O, my God, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you, because You are so good and loving. With your help I will not sin again.”
  5. Then the priest forgives your sins: “I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”.

NB: 1. SORROW FOR SIN AND PURPOSE OF AMENDMENT
Do not make the act of contrition a mere recital of words, but reflect seriously on the evil of sin, on your ingratitude, on the goodness of God and the bitter sufferings that Jesus endured for sins. Contrition is not a matter of sentiment; therefore sincerely detest your sins and earnestly resolve never to sin again and to avoid the occasions of sin. Without true sorrow and the firm purpose of amendment, forgiveness of sin is impossible.
2. PERFORMANCE OF PENANCE
Try to perform your penance at once. The penance which the priest, as the representative of God, imposes upon you, has a much greater value than if you had said these prayers or performed this pious act of your own accord.
Thank almighty God for giving us this great sacrament of mercy, through which He has washed away your sins by His blood. Ask Him to help you, so that you may always make the best use of it that through its help you may one day be able to praise and thank Him eternally in heaven.
3. PRAYER ATER CONFESSION
O most gracious Saviour, how can I thank You for having given us this great sacrament, through which You have washed away my sins in Your blood? Help me always to make the best use of this holy sacrament, that it may never hinder me, but that every time that I receive it, it may lead me one step nearer to my eternal goal, and that with its help, I may one day be able to enjoy Your eternal presence in heaven. Amen.
.
O Mary, Mother of my saviour, help me to remain faithful to Your Son. Help me to avoid the occasions of sin, that I may never offend Him again. Be a mother to me. Amen.
My guardian angel, protect me. Amen.
